As a new cast member who plays Kurt's potential love interest Blaine, and a real-life musician, Darren Criss sympathizes with the groups, but fails to see why they need to take such a public stance against the show.
"I'm a musician and I understand that; I don't think it's a bad thing. I just don't see why they feel the need to make it public," Criss tells Spinner.
Speaking at Rolling Stone's American Music Awards afterparty held at the magazine's brand new lounge and restaurant -- where he shared drinks with Katy Perry, Russell Brand, Jon Bon Jovi and 'Glee' cast members, including Mark Salling and Matthew Morrison (who strode in and out of the party with former 'N Sync member JC Chasez) -- Criss seemed bewildered at the idea that bands would use his show as a litmus test for coolness.
"It seems as if [being part of the show] could be a negative thing, the connotation is that they're somehow cooler than 'Glee.' I think that's their choice, and there doesn't need to be any kind of malice created from it."
"They've got the music, they've got nothing to prove," he added, diplomatically. "They're great bands."
